{"id":172,"date":"2008-10-08T11:19:18","date_gmt":"2008-10-08T11:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ireland.markciecior.com\/?p=172"},"modified":"2008-10-08T11:21:53","modified_gmt":"2008-10-08T11:21:53","slug":"computer-problem-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ireland.markciecior.com\/?p=172","title":{"rendered":"Computer Problem of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This took me five weeks to figure out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The keyboards here in Ireland are a little bit different.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:KB_United_Kingdom.svg\" target=\"_blank\">picture<\/a>.\u00a0 Notice the &#8216;@&#8217; symbol and the quotes are reversed.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve gotten used to the small differences and have had no problem logging into computers in the library, printing labs, and almost every other computer on campus.\u00a0 The only computers I couldn&#8217;t log into were in the two labs in which I have virtually all of my classes.\u00a0 This was a pain.<\/p>\n<p>I had asked lab monitors previously about the problem, here&#8217;s what they told me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I can login, the other students can login.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s a problem with your account, go ask the IT guys.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;We don&#8217;t deal with passwords.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I asked the IT people in charge of (Active Directory) accounts, here&#8217;s what they told me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;We don&#8217;t support engineering labs.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Your Active Directory account is fine, it&#8217;s a problem on their end.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s obviously not our problem.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After five weeks without a roaming profile I&#8217;d had enough.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s where I stood:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All IT labs work fine<\/li>\n<li>Engineering labs running WinXP work fine<\/li>\n<li>Engineering labs running Win2000 don&#8217;t work<\/li>\n<li>All computers have these backwards keyboards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The problem was all my fault, really.\u00a0 I picked too strong a password (it included special characters).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All IT-supported labs and Engineering\/WinXP computers use the Irish keyboard layout <em>all the time<\/em>.\u00a0 Engineering\/Win2000 computers (like those in my classroom labs) use the Irish keyboard layout <em>only once you&#8217;re logged in<\/em>.\u00a0 On the login screen, the US keyboard layout is used.\u00a0 Thus, when I pressed Shift+2 (for a &#8221; symbol) the password box received an &#8216;@&#8217; symbol and I couldn&#8217;t see it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This took me five weeks to figure out.
