Before you read this, you should make a Last Mystery Picture ever guess.

We’re done traveling now so you won’t see any more pictures from exotic locales or hear any more about how warm it is in Italy. This is as disappointing for us as it is for you (probably more so for us). Classes are finished and this week is set aside for nothing but studying. We haven’t found this to be the University’s most effective decision since most people have gone home to party and the few that remain prefer belligerence over studiousness.

Yet here we are, in Kilmurry Village, cooking in what can only be described as filth. It wasn’t so bad last week because of the periodic cleanliness check that all buildings must undergo. Katherine and I have found it rather silly that the adults must come check on our cleanliness, but given the teenagers we live with it’s been a blessing in disguise. The kitchen magically becomes clean the night before these checks with no moldy bread lying around, no three-week-old stains on the plates, and no spilled milk on the table/floor/counter. And then the next day comes.

It usually starts with breakfast. Someone puts milk and cereal in a bowl, eats a bit, and leaves it there for a few days. At lunchtime someone else may fry sausage on the stove and leave the pan there until the next day. Then dinnertime rolls around and chaos breaks loose. After a night of noodles, sauce, and TV-watching, someone apparently could not muster the strength to a) finish their food or b) throw their old sauce away or c) clean the pot they used. The result of all this is below.

Lucky for us, Belfast was having some sort of international food fair around City Hall last weekend. There was kangaroo meat, French baguettes, German brats, and DUTCH PANCAKES. We also perused Peruvian clothing and watched a hog roast on a spit.

The brats were rather expensive, but they were cooked by real Germans and were almost as good as the ones I had in Berlin. Katherine tried a Hawaiian flavored French baguette which turned out to be pretty good. The star of the party, however, was the DUTCH PANCAKES.

I won’t say how much we spent on these pancakes, but they were almost worth every penny. Imagine 25 small, circular, slightly thick pancakes on a plate covered in powdered sugar and chocolate sauce. This is essentially what they were, but they tasted so much better than that. They were, by far, the best part of Belfast.

Tuesday night we had decided to see the fancier side of London around Picadilly circus and the West End. To be honest, Picadilly Circus isn’t too impressive – it pales in comparison to Times Square in Manhattan. A few blocks to the east, though, lies Leicester Square where the red carpet is rolled out for London movie premieres. We spent a few seconds pretending there were famous people out and about before we made our way to Planet Hollywood to eat.

Since space isn’t cheap in the West End this Planet Hollywood was a bit small but had some great film artifacts. In the pictures below you’ll see Hook’s hook, Jack’s axe, and McClain’s badge, all of which were near us at our table. To be honest, I don’t remember what the food was like; I was busy staring at a Gremlin.

Our dinner deal also included tickets to the musical Avenue Q, which I didn’t get to see in Ames last April because of finals. This isn’t your momma’s musical. Avenue Q includes such soon-to-be classics as Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist, What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?, and The Internet is for Porn. I thought it was much better than more mainstream musicals like Wicked (which is really boring). And, the Chinese-guy-who-lives-in-Vancouver that sat next to me gave me some insight into what’s worth seeing in Berlin next month. All in all, it was a good night.

To wash and dry laundry here it costs 4.80 euro (almost $7 per load). We’ll rough it by hanging our clothes to dry.

Our meals have consisted of pizza, chicken, noodles, and our new favorite appetizer – bread with cheese and ham cooked in the oven. There’s also yogurt, peaches/pears, jelly, and fruit juice…but only one of us is brave enough to try these foods…

We also have mint chocolate chip ice cream! Just as good as at home, just in a smaller container (and more expensive).

We went to orientation this morning and stood in line for our information packets which nobody could find. After sitting through an hour of info we realized during the coffee break that we were in the Erasmus orientation – that’s for EU kids. We were directed to the Study Abroad/Intl. Student orientation in a different building. We sat there for another hour listening to the same info (apparently they go a lot slower for the Americans) before lunch.

After lunch we went on a tour in which we learned little because every building on campus was packed with tours and then got our student ID. The student ID process, like most things here, was extremely unorganized and took forever. The day was salvaged because we got a free dinner at one of the two pubs on campus.
